Health Care Without Harm Asia and its Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Program participated in the recently concluded International Zero Waste Cities Conference in Kota Bandung, Indonesia. It was a 3-Day event which began with a Plenary Session in The Papandaya Hotel featuring speakers from international organizations and personalities who are working towards Zero Waste.
Faye Ferrer, GGHH Coordinator for Asia was invited to speak about "Plastics in Healthcare and Sustainable Healthcare Waste Management". She gave presentations in the Civil Society Forum held in Ecocamp, Bandung and in the Medical Waste Handling Without Harm Forum hosted by YPBB at BioPharma.
Faye Ferrer, talked about the various sources of waste including plastics in the health care sector and how it is necessary to go towards the direction of Sustainable Ways of Managing Medical Waste because the health care providers and hospital waste collectors are more susceptible to infection and other occupational diseases.
Ferrer pointed out also, that incineration of medical waste is not necessary, not considering its harmful effects on public health, because 85% of hospital waste are actually same as household waste -- paper and plastics. Meaning, with proper segregation, it can be recycled, reused or repurposed.
HCWH Asia and GGHH Team, would like to thank GAIA Asia Pacific and the #breakfreefromplastic Movement for involving us in this world-changing event, so that it may ignite the development of more Zero Waste Cities worldwide.
