Putrajaya, Malaysia - Solid waste management and public cleanliness will be handled more efficiently with the implementation of the Solid Waste Manage¬ment and Public Cleansing Act, enforced on Sept 1.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said SWM Environment,Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd – had been appointed to undertake the waste management in the peninsula except for Penang, Perak and Selangor.
“It is our broader objective to ensure that the states in the peninsula have a clean environment and good public health through effective solid waste management,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of the concession agreements between the Government and the companies for the privatisation of solid waste.
Under the Act, solid waste management includes the separation of wastes, storage, collection, transportation, processing, recycling and disposal.
Public cleanliness services included cleaning of public roads, drains, hawker centres, markets, beaches, grass-cutting on public road shoulders and parks as well as removal of animal carcasses from such places.
Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu, excluding Selangor will be supervised by Alam Flora Sdn Bhd; Kedah and Perlis, excluding Penang and Perak by Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd; and Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan by SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Wira Chor Chee Heungsaid the Government would pay the concessionaires an average of RM8 per household for each month for seven years.
