SAVE THE DATE | A Virtual Green Hospitals Asia Pre-conference

The Green Hospitals Asian Conference (GHAC) is a biannual event to bring together and unify hospitals, health systems, climate advocates and stakeholders in achieving green, sustainable and climate-resilient Asian healthcare. It is being conducted by Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) with the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Network. The 5th GHAC was held last October 8-10, 2019 at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore. A few months after the conference up to present, the unprecedented spread of COVID-19 shocked the world and burdened the healthcare sector. The 6th GHAC that was planned in 2021 in India was postponed due to the volatile pandemic situation not only in the Asia region but globally as well. Along with the pandemic is the continuous problem with climate change. HCWH with GGHH is  unceasingly making efforts to help hospitals and health systems reduce their operational carbon footprints, build resilient and equitable facilities, and mobilize health professionals in advocating not only public health but also planetary health.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PRE-CONFERENCE

The overarching objective of the GHA Pre-conference is to act as a platform for knowledge exchanges by consolidating the current accomplishments and preparing for stronger healthcare commitments and actions on mitigation, resilience and leadership toward the next GHAC.

Specifically, this pre-conference aims to:

  • Define a climate-resilient, equitable and sustainable path of recovery from COVID and the climate crisis
  • Address the challenges and barriers that prevent health systems from making strong decarbonization commitments;
  • Promote sustainable procurement as essential aspect to climate action; and
  • Expand and capacitate the network of health professionals, experts, advocates and stakeholders and activate them as champions in the field of sustainability and climate.
