    Making good things happenIn almost a decade, Health Care Without Harm - Asia has caused a major shift in the attitudes of health institutions, workers, manufacturers, and the government towards the use of mercury in medical instruments and the shift from burning of medical waste to the promotion of non-burn treatment technologies.  Our successes include:Securing national policies to phase out mercury-based medical devicesThe organization held dialogues with local government units and encouraged hospitals and health care centers to switch to safer alternatives. The information was relayed to the executive management committee and the rank managers.Seminars on environmental health, AO 21 and meetings of chief of hospitals under the direct guidance of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DoH-CHD) highlighted the urgency of mercury phase-out. However,disposal of mercury in all the key areas of the old building of the hospital paved the way for initiation of a move toward mercury-free devices in 2008.

    - General Santos City, South CotabatoThe only recipient of Do No Harm Award in Mindanao, General Santos Doctors Hospital is among the 1st hospitals in the country to have a mercury-out program as early as 2007. Sr. Arcelita Sarnillo initiated the program in relation to the Solid Waste Management Program of the hospital where Health Care Without Harm was invited to give a seminar on mercury alternatives. The seminar was well-attended by the hospital employees, other nearby hospitals and Local Government Units.AO 21 was an addition to the already motivated administration of GSDH to phase-out mercury.     - Makati City, Metro ManilaAiming to be the 1st Green Hospital in the Philippines with solar power air conditioning and cell site, Makati Medical Center started mercury phase-out upon receipt of AO 21 in the office of Medical Director Dr. Benjamin N. Alimurung.Dr. Alimurung immediately collaborated with the hospital’s Facility Management and Engineering Department, Purchasing Department, Hospital Waste Management Subcommittee and Total Quality Services Division to create the Mercury Management team. The team immediately discontinued distribution of mercury thermometers in the patient’s admission and discharge kits and conducted a mercury audit.
